27A - Reading Reflection No. 3

Reading Reflection No. 3 (2nd Half of books):

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Carol Dweck

·      General Theme/Argument of the Book:
o   The general argument that Dweck makes in this book is regarding two different mindsets that stem from beliefs of a person’s own beliefs about their characteristics. The two mindsets that Dweck talks about are the Fixed and Growth mindsets. The fixed refers to those that belief their core traits like creativity and intelligence are set and cannot be changed and this causes those people to be scared of challenge and try to avoid it. However, people with the growth mindset believe that those core traits can be harnessed and sharpened to become stronger so they encourage the unknown and are willing to better themselves.
·      How Did the Book Connect with Our Class?
o   I think it showcased a type of mindset necessary to succeed as an entrepreneur. A lot of our assignments are trial and error and we are showcased to fellow students so people with a fixed mindset would be deterred from continuing with this class especially after receiving negative feedback from fellow students.
·      Design an Assignment for this Class Based on this Book:
o   I would have the students of the class take a preplanned personality test found online. After taking the personality test I would have the students write a reflection based upon their findings just to allow them to kind of connect with themselves because I feel like a lot of college students don’t take much time to do that.
·      What Was My Biggest Aha Moment?:
o   I think my biggest aha moment from reading this book was realizing where I lie on this spectrum of extreme mindsets. I realized that I take away from both mindsets but, seeing the aspects in which I relate more heavily toward the fixed mindset made me realize that I can change the way I think about those traits or situations in which I shy from.

  1. Hey Matthew, I haven't read this book but it seems like a very helpful book in dealing with different personalities. I feel as if you are also able to build in your own mindset and improve what you do best using this book's teachings. Your assignment is also a very good idea because there is still so much to learn about oneself and many students are still confused.
