13A - Reading Reflection No. 1

13A – Reading Reflection No. 1

·      Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, Ashlee Vance

o   What surprised me most:
§  Before reading Vance’s biography I knew a little bit about Musk. I knew he was a very determined man who really wanted to make a change for more than a monetary gain. However, one of the things I wasn’t very informed about was the extent to his determination. He never stopped working and consistently put in a massive amount of hours each week in order to get to where he is now.
o   What I admired the most:
§  I often have trouble motivating myself to get things done on time or to get ahead in my schedule. Many things that are difficult or time consuming get pushed away through procrastination and Elon Musk embodies the opposite of that mindset.
o   What I least admired:
§  While I definitely understand why it’s necessary for Mr. Musk to be difficult and very demanding of those he works with and over, I think that there should be some sort of way to do this as nice as possible. I don’t like how incredibly smart and successful powerhouses like Zuckerberg, Jobs, and musk are often highly condescending.
o   Adversity and Failure endured:
§  While it’s not entirely confirmed by any means, it is believed that Musk is a product of an abusive father. This might be his way of trying to make up for a broken childhood. He also had many situations in which it wasn’t quite clear whether or not his start-ups would make it.

o   What competencies does Elon Musk have?:
§  Musk has the same incredible knowledge and determination as other leading technology advancers however is goals are aligned very differently. Many people are worried about how to make the most money and with creating products and services that will allow a lucrative return. Musk, on the other hand, is attempting to further the human race. His ultimate goal is to colonize Mars and he wants to do so in order to further or save humanity rather than to buy more cars or other materials.

o   What was confusing to me?:
§  The most confusing thing to me was how long and hard Musk worked each and every day. I find myself getting groggy after continuous hours of work and figure that the most efficient way for me to continue getting more work done would be a quick power nap or caffeine. If not, I end up putting in a large amount of time that was either sloppy or completely wasted where as it seems like Musk’s time is constantly well spent.

o   What would I ask Musk?:
§  If I had the ability to ask Elon Musk a question, I think I’d ask him if he would take me to space when he gets it all figured out. Asking him questions about how to be like him or how to improve myself are futile as there’s plenty of videos on the internet of him explaining similar questions.

o   Hard Work?:
§  Elon Musk’s philosophy on hard work is simply to work harder than everyone else. If everyone else works 40 hour weeks and you work 80-100 hours each week you can accomplish in 6 months what they accomplish in a whole year.

12A - Figuring Out Buyer Needs No. 1

12A – Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

Segment:

I chose to use the 18-25 segment for my market as I’ve been using this and am beginning to get a good understanding for the needs of this segment.

Summary:

When I conducted my interviews I was trying to figure out how confident my segment was in their decision making process regarding medical emergency. I decided to figure out who people call before they call 911 and what they search. My three interviewees all agreed that googling medical situations was stressful as most of the time WebMD will let you know your diagnosis is Brain Cancer for every symptom imaginable. Everyone agreed it would be incredibly helpful to have some sort of easy middle man in order to consult anonymously and get a better idea of how to deal with their situation.

Conclusion:

Many people share a similar concern when approaching this topic. It’s very often that people use similar methods of information search when consulting with this sort of problem as there is really only a handful of options available in a timely manner. This can cause panic and irrational decisions which is why I think it’s important to offer another way to solve these sorts of issues.

10A - Elevator Pitch No. 1

11A - Idea Napkin No. 1

·      Me: I’m Matt Roof, a business student at the University of Florida. I pride myself in my ability to adapt to all situations I’m put in and excel. I have exceptional people skills and seem to have an easy time convincing people to agree with me. With the concept I have created (An app or service that allows individuals to proceed with a specific set of questions for different situations in order to gauge the severity of medical emergency) I hope to change the lives of many people, including my own. I want to specifically target the 18-25 age group as this seems to be a demographic in which many misjudged situations cause fatality, however, I believe this product could be great for the population as a whole.
·      What am I offering to customers?: I would be offering a service (most likely in the form of an App) to customers who need assistance with assessing the severity of medical emergencies. There are many situations in which the fear of medical expenses or being reprimanded by the law for substance abuse has caused people to convince themselves that they aren’t in immediate danger and avoid going to the hospital.
·      Who am I offering it to?: I think that this product would be widely accepted across many different demographics. Anyone who isn’t really too informed on medical situations would suggest an unmet need that would hopefully be quenched by this product. The most viable demographic would most likely be those around the 18-25 age group. I think this is where a lot of uncertainty comes into play regarding dangerous situations with physically straining events as well as substance involved events. People around this age group are also very inclined to make the wrong decision.
·      Why do they care?: They would care about this because it would be a very easy and safe way to give people a little more certainty in their decisions regarding medical emergency and increase safety.
·      What are your core competencies?: We would largely expedite the process in deciding whether or not to seek specialists for medical situations.

I think all of these elements are important questions to ask in evaluating a business concept. I think they were all relatively easy for me to answer in regards to my concept which makes me believe that they all tie in nicely with this app. Through more thought of the concept and these elements as a whole I think it will help to smooth out some of the potential issues associated with it.
